Guidelines for Deck Painting

Some tips on Paint Stripping For you to have an estimate of the amount of stripper you will need, measure your deck - and bring your measurements to the store when you will purchase the product. You also need to prepare a deck cleaner that will be used to ensure that no residue of stripper will be left. Prepare a portable power washer to take away large amounts of old coatings, dust and dirt from the surfaces of the deck. Apply the stripper on the deck by using a paintbrush or a roller. Always work on small areas at a time. To avoid discoloration caused by runs and drops of the product - start from the highest to the lowest area. Using the power washer, spray the area where you applied the stripper. Make sure that the chemicals of the stripping agent and loosened finish are completely removed. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry. You may do a quick sanding, if you find some wood fibers that show up. Ensure that you use fine grit sandpaper. An Oxalic acid-based product can remove iron stains but cannot work well against mildew. As with paint stripper, after applying the oxalic-based product - you should wash the deck thoroughly with clean water and let it dry completely before you apply a finishing. Bleach is the most effective product that can remove mildew. However, it does not remove all dirt of the deck's surface. With too much scrubbing using bleach - it will remove the surface wood fibers of the deck that gives a rough and unnatural whitish tone. Painting the deck Generally, when you buy a product to finish your deck - choose one that soaks into the wood because paints that stay only on the surface will easily peel and won't last long. You must always consider three things in searching for a good finish. It must be a water proof or water repellent - and not just a water resistant product. A damp deck will not last long, so you have to protect it by using a water repellent finish. The finish must have ultraviolet (UV) protection and must contain a wood preservative to protect from mildew. Ensure that you buy a product that is right for your deck. Read the label and purchase materials that of good quality. This will result a deck that gives you years of beauty and enjoyment. Some tips in painting your deck. Before finishing your deck with your choice of brand and color, you have to cover your deck with two coats by using a good quality exterior wood primer. Use a brush or roller when you apply the coats. Avoid using a paint sprayer because the primer will just lay on the surface instead of penetrating into the wood. Apply the first coat on the wood and allow to dry completely. Apply the second coat and again, let it dry. Dust off the deck, when the prime coats are completely dry. You may now finish your deck with your choice of color. After applying the coat, use an oil-based deck and floor enamel with semi-gloss sheen that are specially made with extra hardeners. A semi-gloss sheen is more resistant to water. Maintenance The accumulation of dust and dirt on the surface of your deck would hasten the deterioration of the paint you applied. You wouldn’t want this to happen to your paint job. It is thus critical that you take measures to address this with what you can. To avoid this, ensure that you regularly sweep the deck with a soft broom or wash it by using a sponge mop. You also have to make sure that your deck is always dry. Do not clean the deck by using a hose with a hard spray. This will only break the paint faster. And if you find a painted area that is worn out, fix it as soon as possible. Taking these extra efforts will do well in the long run. Eventually you will benefit from all these caring of your deck. You will be able to spend lots of wonderful time on your deck – enjoy the sight and the beauty your deck offers. |
